Cooking in World Cultures

Some ancient civilizations made their mark across the globe, not through exploration and conquering, but through their art. This series explores the art of ancient cuisine, from the long-standing and advanced Egyptians to the striking, seafaring Norse Vikings. Truly a multidisciplinary set, students won't even realize that they're learning from several subject areas, including history, geography, design, technology, and art. Recipes are also included so that the past can be revisited and enjoyed by fellow students, family, and friends.

Series Review: Cooking in World Cultures
"Each book in this accessible series for middle graders begins with a double-page spread introducing an ancient culture. A comprehensive look at food and the role it played in the economic and cultural aspects of each society follows. Different types of foods are explored as well as the customs surrounding family mealtimes and large-group festivals and celebrations. Food's significance in trade with other cultures is presented as well. Text is easy to read with terms explained or as bolded glossary words. Photographs of artifacts and other illustrations will lead to increased student interest and understanding. Several recipes appear in each book, and most ingredients are readily available in modern grocery stores. Both U.S. and metric measurements are included...A strong glossary and additional books and websites to consult for further information are included."
