The Wampanoag lived in eastern Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts, including Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard, and Nantucket. The "People of the First Light" struggled for centuries to maintain a peaceful existence. Surviving many hardships and conflicts, varied communities of Wampanoag peoples still inhabit the lands of their ancient ancestors.
