Violence and Society

Our society seems to be more violent than ever, with recent reports of school shootings, bomb threats, and sporting event enthusiasm that gets out of hand. Additionally, in our hyper-connected world, such news spreads instantaneously across the globe, arguably inspiring copycat crimes. It's crucial that young people be aware of the threats that surround them, and the threats that can endanger peers if not themselves. This series addresses the most prevalent types of danger, including domestic violence, violence in schools and colleges, and violence at sports events. Each book takes a judicious approach to discussing and explaining the prevalence of violence in our society and its impact on its citizens.

Series Review:
"Each title examines its particular form of violence through famous case studies, brief historical information, research into origins and causes, and potential solutions. Brutality is described, but never in a gratuitous manner, and the photographs are sensitively chosen. The books are clearly aimed at understanding violence for the sake of avoiding future incidents, and the case studies are couched in analysis and commentary that help them to steer clear of glorification. The Web site page directs readers to a URL on the Rosen site that will be updated regularly."

Book Review: Deadly School and Campus Violence
"With violence in the schools a far too common headline, this book is timely...The most valuable part of the book examines attempts to forewarn of or prevent attacks. The book looks at the effects of bullying, lack of consistent discipline, availability of weapons, etc. relative to violence. Results may be surprising. Views of proponents and critics of measures undertaken are provided. The writing is interesting and easy to read. The many chilling, color photographs are good complements. There are resources for further information, such as prevention groups, with contact data...Recommended."
