Vincent van Gogh

The Primary Source Library of Famous Artists

The Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh sold only one painting while he was alive. One hundred years after van Gogh's death in 1890, one of his painting's sold for $82.5 million, the highest price ever paid for a work of art at the time. For most of his life, van Gogh battled mental illness and poverty. However, no matter how troubled he was, he continued to paint. Students will learn about "the Crazy Redhead," as he was called, through his self-portraits and pivotal works, including The Potato Eaters, Sunflowers, and The Starry Night.
