Entertainment in Colonial America

Primary Sources of Everyday Life in Colonial America

Period documents like playbills and theater notices from the 17th and 18th centuries give students an authentic look at how early Americans spent their leisure time. Native American and European-inspired sports, games, and festivals also are illustrated with primary source imagery and artifacts. Students can use these artifacts as a touchstone to help analyze how the structure of community and family life in early America influenced leisure time and recreation.
