Defender of the Republic
Cicero was a Roman statesman and orator who tried unsuccessfully to preserve the republican form of government. His assassination was sanctioned by Rome's first emperor, Augustus. Cicero's prolific writings have survived and have given us an intimate and exciting picture of Roman politics.
