Abraham Lincoln

Pivotal Presidents: Profiles in Leadership

It may be little exaggeration to say that the figure of Abraham Lincoln embodies the American ideal more so than any other U.S. president. Although he came from humble beginnings and held several odd jobs before launching his career in politics, Lincoln's determination and natural abilities brought him to the White House, where he led the struggle to preserve the union and emancipate the country's slaves. Lincoln's remarkable life--from his childhood to his role as Commander in Chief during the Civil War to his tragic death--is chronicled in this captivating volume.

Series review: Pivotal Presidents: Profiles in
Leadership
"The titles
are well illustrated with photos and reproductions that offer significant detail
and greatly enhance the presentations. ... Teachers will be able to align these
titles to Common Core Standards by asking students to argue whether or not the
author makes his claim that these presidents were pivotal to our history.
Classes can study the structure of each text and how the author builds an
argument using quotes from primary sources. Lincoln, in particular, makes wonderful
use of quotes. Solid choices for libraries looking to update their presidential
biographies."

Book review: Abraham Lincoln
"Being President during the Civil War was a burden and
sorrow to Abraham Lincoln, whose life was filled with personal challenges as
well. Beginning with his childhood, the story shows how his character developed
along with his love of learning. Illustrations in color and black and white
proliferate; leading readers through young Lincoln's many occupations. He proved
himself as a state legislator and lawyer, turning to national politics in 1847
as representative from Illinois. ... Young readers will be fascinated by the
difficulties Lincoln faced and how he handled them."
