History of Islam

Understanding Islam

The story of Islam begins with a humble man who was devoted to practicing kindness towards others, and it continues with millions of followers in many countries. Islam is an intricate, beautiful, sophisticated, morally scrupulous world religion that asks its followers above all to be mindful of others in their community. Most Muslims are peaceful people who practice a religion that calls for personal responsibility and a commitment to being a good and kind person in the world. It's no surprise that a religion as morally and ethically engaged as Islam is still a powerful force in today's world. It is responsible for uniting individuals and families in the pursuit of the values of kindness, compassion, and responsibility to others that Muhammad exemplified over 1,300 years ago. Its vivid history is not forgotten as it grows into other areas of the world, and its story continues today even when new cultural contexts result in Islam's ongoing evolution and adaptation to local circumstances.

Book Review: The History of Islam
**STARRED REVIEW**
"This well-written narrative transports the reader back thousands of years to the beginning of Islam. Written in a straightforward, easy-to-understand style, this book accurately portrays the life of the Prophet Muhammad and the development of Islam. The section of Islam Today dispels many commonly held misconceptions about Muslims. The author's in-depth understanding of Islam is apparent as sensitive issues such as the differences between the two major branches of Islam and the treatment of Muslims today in Europe are broached with accuracy and impartiality. Informative and interesting graphics consisting of pictures of Muslims from around the world and ancient, intricate Islamic artwork are generously positioned throughout the book. Teachers and students alike will appreciate the glossary of terms, contact information for Islamic Centers, and suggestions for additional readings. This is an excellent book to use for student research projects. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED."
