The Department of Energy
During the oil embargo in the 1970s, the shortage of oil created long lines and high prices at gas stations. The environmental movement was new and calling attention to pollution caused by fossil fuels, and the near melt down at Three Mile Island. In an effort to calm fears and find solutions to America's energy problems, the Department of Energy was created in 1977. This book relates the turbulent history of the department from the dark days of the energy crisis to the ongoing national debate over finding new sources of cleaner, renewable energy.
