The Spanish-American War

Resentful of Spanish mistreatment of Cubans and the destruction of the U.S. warship, Maine, America went to war against Spain in 1898. "Remember the Maine!" was the battle cry that spurred the United States to a quick and decisive victory in this three-month conflict. The loss ended Spain's role as a colonial power, but further established the United States as a world power.
