Francisco Vasquez de Coronado

Born to a noble family in Spain, this explorer crisscrossed the southwestern United States in his lifelong quest for the "seven cities of gold." Although he never found the cities, Coronado saw the prairies and deserts of the Southwest fifty years before they would be settled by Spaniards and was the first European to see the Grand Canyon.
